So we’re at the midpoint of an incredible week in the world of football. Three champions were crowned this weekend in three different countries; and we also had the crowning of a champion in the last ever UEFA Cup tournament.
In Spain, FC Barcelona claimed their second trophy in the space of a week. They are now Copa del Rey and La Primera Liga Champions for the season 2008/09. Their sights, I’m sure are now firmly fixed on the Champions’ League final next week in Rome. This will truly be a historic season for them if they can pull the treble.
In England, a league that Manchester united has dominated for the past two seasons, the red devils once again triumphed. Their requirement of just 1 point from their match against Arsenal at the weekend was very evident in their play. They too seemed to be totally focused on Rome.
Italy, yet again, applauded its champion team Inter Milan this weekend. They looked every bit the champions with a great showing against Siena with a 3-0 drubbing of that side.
last but not least, Shakhtar Donetsk claimed the last UEFA Cup trophy last night with a 2-1 victory over a resilient Werder Bremen side. Werder though missing some of their start players put up enough of fight to make this an excellent encounter.
Congratulations to all the teams and their respective fans, but now on to the final bit of business. the Champions' League is still to be decided between undoubtedly the two best football teams in the modern game right now, Manchester united and FC Barcelona. if you are going to miss this match, my condolences, but if you are going to watch it, we are promised one of the best spectacles in the game. Sorry boss, I'm calling in sick.
On a side note, this is the time of year that football fans love and hate the most. It’s a time of excitement as the transfer window opens and the rumor mill starts up. But it’s also a time when fans such as myself, who have structured their weekends around watching their favorite teams and stars play, will have to find something else to do. Read a book perhaps? Naahhhh. There is always Trinidad’s PFL, and the upcoming LFL season (Lingerie Football League) :-)
