There is a little more than a month before the start of the 78th Serie A season. Whilst this season will just see a change of kits for most teams, it will be the start of a new era for others. Inter Milan will start the season without the mercurial Zlatan in their ranks, whereas the biggest ‘miss’ might be the loss of Ricky Kaka for AC Milan. I say ‘might’ because of the re-emergence of one of my all time favourite players, Ronaldo de Assis Moreira.
‘R80’ is in a desperate race to rediscover the form that once made him the most feared player on the planet. After looking at AC Milan’s matches on their US tour, it is very apparent that ‘dinho’ is the major piece in the AC Milan puzzle this season. The departure of kaka has certainly reopened the door for this footballing genius to express himself once more.
My only concern is that we don’t see a repeat of last season. For those of you that missed it, Ronaldinho started off last season with a blast, leading AC Milan to some major victories, none as important as in the Derby della Modinna. The arrival of David Beckham, though, ended his good run with Carlo Ancelotti citing his reasons for benching 'dinho as ‘Beckham brings more balance to the team’. This season should be different, no becks, no Kaka. All that remains is for Ronnie to step up, and this preseason has seen him gain leaps and bounds fitness wise as well as we’re seeing a spike in his confidence.
Tomorrow we shall see AC take on Inter in the world football challenge. Hopefully both teams will put on the kind of footballing spectacle that we have come so accustomed to seeing when these teams play. I hope the AC Milan management appreciates what he able to bring to club and don’t dispose of him as they did Rivaldo.
