UEFA Super Cup: Sevilla vs FC Barcelona History Lesson

Only a couple of hours away from the UEFA Super Cup match between FC Barcelona and Sevilla, and one can’t help but reminisce on the last time these two teams met in this competition.

It was 2006 and Barcelona boasted the likes of Messi, Eto’o, Ronaldinho, Deco, Puyol, Xavi, Guily and Thiago Motta. They were also coming off of a world beating season winning both La Liga and Champions’ League titles. Ronaldinho was the king of all that he surveyed, Samuel Eto’o was the undisputed scoring champion in Europe and Messi was an up and coming talent.

For Sevilla, 2005/6 season was the first time that they lifted the UEFA Cup. With Luis Fabiano and Frédéric Kanouté leading the line and an effervescent Dani Alves running their flanks they were a team that should not be taken lightly.

Sevilla triumphed 3-0 that day in a match that signalled the beginning of the end of the Joga Bonito era for Barcelona and Rijkaard. The next two seasons were forgettable for this Barcelona team and Rijkaard was replaced by Pep in 2008, and the rest as they say is history.

p.s. I know many FC Barcelona “fans” would not remember these events, so I’ve added the highlights from the game to remind them.
