What a Weekend!!

After a rather eventful week in the world of football we entered this weekend with less than normal vigor and interest in the game. No big match ups were offered this was to be the run of the mill weekend before the Clasicos. But for some fans out there, this turned into the most exciting footballing weekend thus far.

Tottenham Hotspur’s 9-1 mauling of Wigan Athletic stole the headlines. The run up to this game for Tottenham has been really mundane to say the least. Apart from their position in the table, a run of W-L-L-W coming into this game was keeping the team pretty grounded. In all fairness to them their top striker this season Jermain Defoe was absent for the two losses to both Arsenal and Stoke City. With Robbie Keane ruled out, it was up to a now fit Aaron Lennon, Peter Crouch and an always dangerous Defoe to take up the reigns again and show what the team is capable of.

Defoe’s 5 goals, Peter Crouch’s 1 coupled with a clearly inform Lennon and an ever dangerous Niko Kranjcar kept Wigan on the backfoot. The midfield pairing of Tom Huddlestone and Wilson Palacios were impenetrable and allowed the attacking quartet to truly express themselves. They have certainly sounded a warning to the other teams in the league that Tottenham are here this season.

Across the pond, the MLS’s newly ordained MVP Landon Donovan led his LA Galaxy team into the MLS Cup finals against Real Salt Lake last night. After an exquisite set up for LA’s goal, his team fizzled out of the contest somewhat and allowed Real Salt Lake to equalize. RSL eventually took the game in a penalty shootout and are now MLS Cup champions. Congrats to RSL, hard luck Donovan and Becks!!!

How can you mention this weekend and not include AC Milan's victory against Cagliari, which described the Rossoneri's brand as 'champagne football'. Ronaldinho who has managed to shed some pounds in recent times to keep the fatboy comments from the press at bay, seemed to be really enjoying his football with a display of deft touches, when linking with his country man Alexandre Pato in the front line.

Relieved from his defensive responsibility he is now able to do what he does best - demonstrate artistry!

Outside with TH, Wigan is substandard opposition, talk about AC!

LOL! I love this passion for this game. You boys try to play nice ok. Both games were commendable for different reasons.

But seriously. Substandard or not. 9-1 is RI DUN CU LOUS!
